Grinding Balls for stable mills and predictable cost per tonne

Songatech supplies cast and forged grinding balls that resist wear and breakage in high-impact milling. Each batch is heat treated for through-hardness, checked for roundness, and supplied with traceability so your mill runs stable and your cost per tonne stays predictable.

Overview

Grinding media performance depends on hardness profile, impact toughness, size control, and clean steel. Songatech focuses on these areas so you get steady grind, controlled make-up rates, and reliable power draw.

Clean steel Through-hardness Power stability

Benefits

  • Consistent core hardness for impact resistance
  • Uniform surface hardness for longer wear life
  • Tight size tolerances for stable mill power and throughput
  • Lot traceability with QA reports on request

Forged Steel Balls

Recommended for primary and SAG milling where impact toughness is critical. Produced from clean steel, forged and heat treated to reach target hardness across the cross-section.

  • Typical hardness: 55 to 63 HRC by size
  • Common sizes: 60, 80, 90, 100, 105, 125 mm
  • Very good roundness and low spalling in high-impact duty
Primary / SAG Impact toughness

Cast Steel Balls (High Chrome and Low Chrome)

Best for secondary and regrind circuits, as well as cement. High Chrome options give strong abrasion resistance in corrosive or very hard ores.

  • Typical hardness: 58 to 65 HRC by grade
  • Common sizes: 20 to 90 mm
  • High Chrome grades available for acidic or corrosive pulps
Regrind / Cement Abrasion control

Frequently asked questions

SizingHow do I pick the correct size mix for my mill
Start from your current power draw and target grind. Choose the largest ball that breaks the coarsest fraction, then set a top-up blend that keeps power stable. Adjust monthly using liner wear, cyclone cut, and grind targets.
MatchCan Songatech match an existing specification
Yes. Provide size distribution, target hardness, and duty. The team will match or improve the grade and confirm with a short plant trial if needed.
CertificatesDo you provide test certificates
Yes. Batch certificates include size, hardness readings, and heat treatment records. Chemistry certificates are available for cast grades.

Note. Hardness ranges are typical targets. Final grade and hardness are set to site conditions and the size mix.

Selection guide

Primary / SAG High impact

Coarse feed with high impact energy. Focus on toughness and stable power.

Recommended: Forged Steel 100 to 125 mm Blend by power draw Track top-up rate
Secondary Mixed impact and abrasion

Transitional duty where both impact and wear matter. Match hardness to liner profile and grind target.

Recommended: Forged 80 to 100 mm Alternative: Cast 60 to 90 mm Set hardness to mill conditions
Regrind / Fine High abrasion

Fine grind with dominant abrasion. Higher surface hardness helps with wear control.

Recommended: Cast High Chrome 20 to 60 mm Aim for high surface hardness
Cement Dry grinding

Dry clinker grinding. Pick grade based on clinker hardness and mill layout.

Recommended: Cast Low or High Chrome 20 to 90 mm Select grade for abrasion and dryness
