Spiral Concentrators

Your Partner in Mining Strength and Precision

Gravity Separation • spirals

spirals that recover more with steady, low-energy separation

Songatech supplies gravity spiral concentrators for chrome, iron ore, mineral sands, and coal fines. The design delivers efficient separation with minimal product loss, low energy use, and simple maintenance. Installation and optimisation support ensure fast results.

Key facts

  • Applications: Chrome, iron ore, mineral sands, coal fines, heavy minerals
  • Typical feed size: 0.1 mm to 3.0 mm, optimum 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm
  • Turns and diameter: 5 to 7 turns, 600 mm to 950 mm by model
  • Starts per module: Single, double, or triple start
  • Materials: Fibreglass body with polyurethane or ceramic wear surface
  • Capacity: ~0.3 to 4 t/h per start, ore dependent
  • Control features: Adjustable splitters, wash-water rings, optional repulpers
  • Layout: Banks with distributors and launders for balanced flow
  • Lead time: Stock parts dispatch in 24 to 48 hours, custom sets to schedule

Overview

Separation on spirals relies on density and size differences under laminar flow. Correct feed density, size band, and splitter settings keep cut points stable and protect yield. Songatech focuses on spiral profile, wear surfaces, and bank layout so circuits run predictably with short changeover time.

Stable cut points Low power Easy optimisation

Benefits

  • High recovery with low product loss when sized correctly
  • Low power consumption with simple water services
  • Modular banks that scale with production
  • Wear resistant liners that extend service life
  • Fast set up and easy adjustments during optimisation

Chrome spirals

Rougher, cleaner, and scavenger profiles. High capacity roughers for 0.5 to 2.0 mm and cleaners for 0.1 to 1.0 mm. Adjustable splitters and wash water sharpen grade and yield.

Chrome duty

Iron ore spirals

Profiles aimed at rejecting silica and alumina while holding Fe recovery. Common in rougher–cleaner circuits with middlings recycle to lift overall recovery.

Fe recovery

Coal fines spirals

Low SG cut for 0.15 to 2.0 mm coal fractions with a focus on ash rejection. Delivers a stable low density split with simple control.

Low SG cut

Mineral sands spirals

Suited to ilmenite, rutile, and zircon pre concentration. Multi stage cleaner–scavenger layouts with repulpers where needed.

  • Full traceability on modules, liners, and accessories

Frequently asked questions

SelectionHow do I choose the correct spiral for my ore
Start with feed size distribution and density contrast between valuable mineral and gangue. Select a profile for the duty, then set wash water and splitter positions during a short plant trial.
DensityWhat is the ideal feed density
Most duties run well at 30 to 45 percent solids by mass. The optimal point depends on ore behaviour and target grade, so confirm during commissioning.
RetrofitCan spirals be retrofitted into an existing plant
Yes. Banks are modular and can be matched to current floorspace, launder elevations, and feed pipework.

Note. Final selection depends on test work, size distribution, target SG cut, and site water quality. Songatech assists with sizing, bank layout, and start up settings.

Selection guide

Chrome rougher0.5 to 2.0 mm

Objective: high recovery at high throughput. Set up: Double start, 5 to 7 turns, wash water at Stage 2. Set splitters for yield and add cleaners on concentrate streams.

Chrome cleaner0.1 to 1.0 mm

Objective: upgrade concentrate grade. Set up: Single or double start with reduced wash water. Use finer splitter apertures and close control of feed density.

Iron ore rougher0.3 to 2.0 mm

Objective: reject silica and alumina. Set up: Double start, 7 turns, moderate wash water. Consider middlings recycle to the rougher bank.

Coal fines0.15 to 2.0 mm

Objective: low SG cut with strong ash rejection. Set up: Single start, 5 to 7 turns, low wash water. Maintain lower feed density for sharp separation.

Mineral sands cleaner0.1 to 1.5 mm

Objective: heavy mineral pre concentration. Set up: Multi stage cleaner–scavenger with repulpers. Use repulp between stages to free locked middlings.

Scavenger duty0.3 to 2.0 mm

Objective: recover values from tails. Set up: high capacity profile with higher wash water. Open splitters to capture near miss particles at acceptable grade.

Packing and delivery
